Noun 1. latent qualities or abilities that may be developed and lead to future success or usefulness.
In her poem “To Be of Use,” Marge Piercy reflects on objects in a museum, items that once were a part of some culture’s daily life many years ago. She concludes with the following lines:
The work of the world is common as mud.
Botched, it smears the hands, crumbles to dust.
But the thing worth doing well done
has a shape that satisfies, clean and evident.
Greek amphoras for wine or oil,
Hopi vases that held corn, are put in museums
but you know they were made to be used.
The pitcher cries for water to carry
and a person for work that is real.
A person cries for work that is real. We formed Potentials so that we could get to the real, to the authentic, integrated, inspired, and generous life that is real with learners, colleagues, and professionals across a wide variety of sectors. We come together with a deep concern for the many divisions and antagonisms that seem to shape our daily lives, our workplaces and the media we share.
We believe – no, we are convinced that there is a life more real, and we are committed to accompanying you to that place. We call ourselves Potentials because we know we are all making our way; there is potential to be unlocked, discovered and/or rediscovered inside every individual, system, and circumstance. We do our best most days, and some of those days are better than others. The opportunities to grow and learn are before us every day, and we see that as our shared potential.
We will never pretend that this work is easy. But we will be in it with you, every step of the way.
