How Do You View Work/Life Balance?

I had started a new job and was excited, very excited. It was not uncommon for me to wake up at 3 am with a puzzle solved, or a new idea. I would get out of bed and head into my home office to get the idea or puzzle recorded and often sent the email to the person I intended to share it with, so I could 1) be sure to remember to hit send and 2) go back to sleep.

It was great, except people started giving me a hard time about the time/date stamp on the emails, pushing me to “stop doing that” and expressing worry that I was going to burn out. It was annoying/upsetting. I dedicated more time than I would like to admit trying to figure out how to disable the time/date stamp function on my computer.

Imagine my delight when I read Simon Sinek’s article and looked at the data! You might be surprised…

Simon reveals why you should think twice before telling your team that they shouldn’t work after-hours for the sake of work-life balance:

“I have always prided myself on being the kind of leader that works to help those on my team maintain a work-life balance. I want people on my team to spend quality time with their families in the evenings and not work on weekends. Even when there are those times when we have to work late or on weekends, I try to give some time back. For example, I’ll try to give them a day off during the week to make up for their lost Saturday. And if anyone on my team sends emails at night or on a weekend, I encourage them to stop doing that. So you can imagine my surprise when I found out that I was actually doing damage to the morale of some of the best people on my team.”
